Tips on how to have the best engagement session | Northern California Wedding Photographer
If you’re reading this, you’re engaged! Yay you! Or if you’re not engaged, and hope to be soon, I’m proud of you for being on top of your game. Today’s blog post is going to be a little list of tips I have for newly engaged couples during their photography sessions, because let’s face it - it’s pretty nerve-racking to be in front of the camera kissing, at least it is for me!
But I’m here to let you know that there’s nothing to be nervous about, especially with me. I like to have fun and I like to make my couples laugh, so it feels effortless. Let’s have a good time, shall we?!
First things first, let’s talk about how to dress during an engagement session, and what accessories, etc. we believe you can incorporate in your photoshoot wardrobe! This will help you prepare, and not feel so stressed the day of.
Take a look at our “what to wear” PDF guide, which goes into a lot of detail below.
Long story, or PDF short, what you wear is important, to not only feel good, but you’re going to look back at these photos and reminisce one day. We want it to be perfect. So, let’s go over the basics.
Decide where you want to shoot. Is it in the desert, on the beach, in the woods, in the city? This matters for wardrobe selection! You won’t be in a flowy white dress with a bathing suit in the mountains (unless that’s your thing, and if so, get it girl). Dress appropriately for the location. Bring an extra pair of shoes too, that could help you feel a little at ease, to know you have other options!
Know that I will guide you. I won’t control your movements! I want it to feel relaxed and effortless. I may throw out a funny joke or two to make you laugh, but I promise you’ll warm up.
Don’t be afraid to bring that extra pair of shoes, but also bring a few outfit options! Again, this will take the pressure off, and I can even help you select out of the pieces you brought. Some colors look weird at sunset, so the more options, the better.
If you’re not used to wearing a long dress with heels, don’t wear that. These are truly supposed to feel magical and effortless, so wear something that makes you feel like yourselves - even if you do spruce it up a little.
In the PDF you can take a look at some color tones, and what looks good on different skin tones. Ultimately you will wear what you want to feel the best in, but these are some of my suggestions.
If you love prints as much as I do, be careful with them! Again, bringing the specific pieces you’re thinking about wearing is a good thing to do, so you can see how the environment we’re photographing in is. Lighting, coloring, etc.
Do you want to put your dog in the photos? Do you have a favorite hat you want to incorporate in your photos? What about a “Save The Date” board?
My ultimate goal is to make YOU happy. So if you have a long flowy yellow dress you want to rock, girl, let’s do it. And if your S/O has a pair of high socks with shorts he wants to wear - (as long as you’re OK with it) you go dude!
We hope this helps you feel better about this engagement session.
If we have one coming up, I can’t wait to make some magic with you both.
All the love,
Diane
